The macrobiotic approach to Rice Dumplings

June 5 is equivalent to the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar and this is the day we eat rice dumplings in memory of a great spiritual teacher, “Qu Yuan”. 

At Lapan Wellness Cafe, the healthier version of the rice dumplings are handmade with either organic sprouted black rice or organic sprouted sweet millet with a bean-based filling.

Functions: Sweet millet is traditionally used in calming the emotion and regulating blood sugar while black rice, strengthening the lungs and immunity. 

Sweet millet dumplings (甜小米粽子)and black rice dumplings (紫米粽子)are available frozen or fresh at Lapan Wellness Cafe and their online store.

How dumplings are made:
Wrap sprouted sweet millet or black rice in bamboo leaves, add a filling of mixed beans and condiments, normally seasoned with shoyu, then steamed to perfection.

Traditionally, rice dumpling is eaten on the fifth day of the fifth month 端午节) of the lunar calendar in memory of ”Qu Yuan 屈原“ a great poet, politician, diplomat who killed himself by drowning in a river called “Mi Luo River 汨罗江“ after his country (“Chu 楚国”)was invaded and destroyed by the Ching Emperor 2,297 years ago in China. In order to protect his body from being eaten by sea creatures, citizens there and then scattered rice dumplings in the river as feed.

We still keep this traditional in this part of the world beholding our gratitude and appreciation to this great spiritual teacher.
